Support for Music Therapy Licensure

As a Board Certified Music Therapist, I strongly support licensure for Music Therapists. Board Certified Music Therapists are allied heath professionals who provide evidence based clinical care to individuals with varying healthcare goals. Licensure protects the music therapy profession from misrepresentation. More importantly, it protects Virginia residents who access music therapy services from misrepresentation and harm. After reviewing the proposed changes, I support the update adopting CBMT's continuing education requirements. My only concern is removing the regulation regarding conversion therapy. In my professional opinion, conversion therapy is outside of the scope of music therapists. Even so, the regulation prohibiting music therapists from providing conversion therapy would have protected queer and trans youth throughout the state. I support the initial regulation prohibiting Music Therapists from offering conversion therapy to youth.

Support for licensure of music therapists

As a licensed clinical social worker who has been working in healthcare and mental health for 10+ years I strongly support licensure for music therapists. Licensure for music therapists in Virginia would ensure that only qualified professionals who meet national education and training standards can practice, protecting clients and promoting ethical, effective care. Music therapists provide valuable, evidence-based services that support mental health, rehabilitation, and overall well-being, making them an essential part of Virginia’s healthcare and educational systems

Support for licensure

As a Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist, I fully support licensure for Music Therapy in Virginia. Music Therapy is a vital treatment to many with physical, cognitive, intellectual, and emotional disabilities. Providing licensure for Music Therapy will help protect those that they treat to ensure patients and clients are getting adequate and professional care.

Support of music therapy licensure

As a licensed professional counselor and board certified music therapist, I strongly support licensure for music therapists. Music therapists provide evidence-based services that support a wide range of clinical needs, and it is ethically imperative that clients only receive this care from qualified professionals who meet the required education and training standards. Without such licensure, there is risk of misrepresentation and harm. In reviewing the proposed changes, I support the shift to CBMT's continuing education requirements. However, I am very concerned about the removal of regulation regarding conversion therapy, as conversion therapy is outside of the scope of music therapists. Further, it is not supported by evidence-based practice, and the removal of language prohibiting conversion therapy leaves queer and trans youth vulnerable to harm, and to treatment that is not supported by evidence-based practice. I support the initial regulation prohibiting music therapists from offering conversion therapy to youth.

Support for licensure, rejection of "conversion therapy"

As an ordained minister, an educator, and a human being I strongly support licensure for music therapists as a way of ensuring compassionate, effective care for the wide range of clinical needs that music therapy addresses.  Licensure that represents standards of education and training is crucial as a protection for vulnerable individuals in our society against misrepresentation and clinical harm, and the continuing education requirements of the CBMT represent an affirmation of that belief.

I am exceedingly concerned, however, about the removal of language banning so-called "conversion therapy."  Not a single medical professional organization approves these tactics as safe, never mind effective, and in our current cultural climate the explicit protection of the most vulnerable members of our society is of paramount importance.

"Conversion therapy" does not convert, nor is it therapeutic, and we who commit our lives to caring for the vulnerable must be crystal-clear in our rejection of this abusive quackery.  It is imperative that the language that prohibits music therapists from offering conversion therapy to youth be restored.

Support for licensure, dissent about "conversion therapy"

As an LAPC and board certified music therapist, I strongly support licensure for music therapists. Music therapists provide evidence-based services that support a wide range of clinical needs, and it is ethically imperative that clients only receive this care from qualified professionals who meet the required education and training standards. Without specific licensure, there is risk of misrepresentation and harm. Additionally, I support the shift to CBMT's continuing education requirements.

However, I am incredibly concerned about the removal of regulation regarding conversion therapy and the removal of language prohibiting conversion therapy. Removing these regulations and prohibitions leaves queer and trans youth vulnerable to harm and to treatment that is not supported by evidence-based practice. It is important to return the initial regulation prohibiting music therapists from offering conversion therapy to youth for the safety of queer and trans persons participating in music therapy, as well as for music therapists to ethically and soundly practice within their scope.

Yes to MT-BC, No to Conversion Therapy

I greatly support of board certified licensure for Music Therapists. However, 18VAC140-30-90 Standards of practice section B13 should not be included at all. This is because conversion therapy should not be practiced by anyone, especially board certified music therapists. Conversion therapy is a pseudoscientific dangerous practice which are connected to depression, PTSD, and suicide, according to researchers at Stanford Medicine. Musical therapy is a clinical profession. It should not be professionalized with licensure yet include dangerous unprofessional practices simultaneously.
